Although they knew each other in Padula, Raffaele and Maria Lucia were reintroduced to each other again in Brooklyn, NY by Raffaele's uncle Antonio Vigliante. They were married in 1907 at Our Lady of Peace catholic church in Brooklyn, NY. In 1910 they purchased their first home at 801 Bergen street that raised 7 children, as well as a refuge for all of the family coming from Padula to the U.S. In their house, there were as many as up to 30 people residing in the home. Maria Lucia and Raffaele not only raised their own seven children, but they also took care of Maria's father Michele Cartusciello, mother Carmela Breglia, brothers, sisters, their families, as well as Rafaele's, sisters, brother and their families. Their sacrifice held no bounds when it came to the family from Padula. Raffaele worked as a stone cutter in Padula, but got work as a building maintenance worker working all day getting very little sleep at night to make sure the family had all that he could give them, even if all they had to share was their home, food, and love. Caring as much as Maria Lucia did, she grew tired, and in 1940, she passed away. Raffaele lived until 1942. Although they lived a life in poverty, their family, children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren have lived fantastic lives and had amazing careers, all thanks to Maria and Raffaele's struggles and sacrifices. Thanking them for their struggles feels like it's not enough. As their grandson, together with my brother and son feel this was the best way to show my appreciation as well as pay tribute to two people we may have never met, but cherish, envy and love with all our hearts.

Love, your grandchildren Michael, and Ralph along with great grandchild Michael Angelo Matera
